Okay, so nobody really believes that actual zombies exist, much less that they will be attacking everyone someday. But people who identify themselves as either preppers or survivalists regularly use the term "zombie" to describe people who are not prepared for a major catastrophe.

These "zombies" will be the people who are knocking down the doors of those who have prepared supplies to make it through the terror attack, nuclear explosion or other doomsday scenario. So when you hear about the "zombie apocalypse" from people who are not just sitting in front of their X-box playing video games, they are talking about a scenario that they will refer to as "SHTF."
The acronym "SHTF" stands for "Sewage" Hits The Fan and could be any scenario that causes widespread panic and chaos. The most commonly feared SHTF scenarios are something that causes a failure of the national power grid, like an "EMP" (electro-magnetic pulse) from a nuclear bomb burst or a "CME" (coronal mass ejection) from the sun.
When a disaster strikes that is worthy of being in the league of a "zombie apocalypse," it is expected to be like Hurricane Katrina or Hurricane Sandy, but on a regional or national scale.
This scale of disaster will overwhelm the local, state and federal governments' ability to provide relief, much worse than was witnessed in any previous natural disaster, like those in New Orleans or New York.
When the zombie apocalypse hits, it is expected to be a very sudden occurrence, catching many people off guard. Considering how much time the average person spends at work or commuting, most every prepper or survivalist has an emergency car kit in their trunk.
The biggest concern is the probability that a power outage will cause civil unrest and such chaos with traffic signals and other infrastructure that many people will be stranded away from home. But don't worry, only the unprepared will turn into zombies...
